Diabetic moms’ babies may have weak sucking reflex

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Immature sucking patterns are often seen in infants whose mothers developed diabetes during pregnancy and had to be treated with insulin, new research indicates. On the other hand, babies of mothers with diabetes that was managed with a careful diet do not seem to have impaired sucking reflexes.

Poor lung function tied to higher stroke risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The chances of having a stroke are modestly increased in people with impaired lung function, even if they have never smoked nor had respiratory symptoms, researchers report. However, that finding only applies to whites, it seems, not to blacks.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The occurrence of breast cancer is lower among women who have had infertility problems because of an ovulation disorder than among women who have not had difficulty conceiving, according to findings from a study involving more than 116,000 women.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - New mothers now have even more incentive to shed pounds gained during pregnancy, other than wanting to fit into those pre-pregnancy jeans. A new study indicates an association between gaining weight in adulthood and an increased risk of breast cancer after menopause.

Heartburn drugs raise risk of hip fractures: study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Long-term use of popular anti-heartburn drugs that block stomach acid production increases the risk of hip fractures in adults over 50, perhaps because the drugs inhibit calcium absorption, researchers said on Tuesday.
